Women’s Soccer To Face Springfield Tech In Region 21 Semifinals

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- The No. 3 seed Massasoit women's soccer team will face second-seeded Springfield Tech in the Region 21 Tournament Semifinals in Holyoke, Mass., on Saturday at 2 PM.

Massasoit (7-8, 6-4) went 1-1 against the Rams (6-4-1, 6-3-1) during the 2016 season, winning 2-0 at home back on Sept. 24 before falling, 3-1, on Oct. 15.

The winner will take on either top-seeded and nationally ranked Holyoke CC (14-5, 10-0) or No. 4 seed Bristol (5-5-1, 5-4-1) in the Region 21 Championship on Sunday at 12 PM in Holyoke.

Massasoit Notes
The Warriors are vying for their fourth consecutive trip to the Region 21 finals, falling in each title game to the HCC Cougars.

The Warriors have averaged 3.8 goals per game, led by the region's top scorer in forward Shelby Sprague (Stoughton). On the season, Sprague has netted 30 goals in 15 games and added five assists for 65 points. For her two-year career in Brockton, she has totaled 55 goals and nine assists for 119 points.

Fellow sophomore Krista Woodworth (Norton) has also been an offensive force, setting up Sprague on countless occasions. Woodworth leads the region in assists (15) and has also contributed 11 goals for 37 points. Over her two years donning green and white, Woodworth has 20 goals and 25 assists (65 points).

Additional sophomores include defender Steph Collyer (Rockland), with one goal and four assists and defender/goalie Taylor Coletti (Whitman), who has one assist on the year.

Other key contributors include freshmen Mariella McEachern (4g, 3a) and Noelle Moliere (3g, 7a).

In net, a number of different players have suited up as keeper, with Kelly Cronin (Weymouth) seeing a majority of the action. In her first season playing goalie, Cronin has made 115 saves and posted three shutouts.

Tournament Notes

Massasoit is 2-4 against the tournament field this season, with both victories coming at home against Springfield Tech and Bristol.

The Warriors are attempting to reach the Region 21 Championship for the fourth consecutive season. The last Region 21 crown for Massasoit came in 1999. The only other regional championship came in 1989.

Holyoke CC is ranked No. 10 in the most recent NJCAA poll and the Cougars have won seven of the last eight regional titles.
