Massasoit Women's Basketball Claims Greenwood Credit Union Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. ---- The Massasoit Community College women's basketball team claimed a pair of victories at the Greenwood Credit Union Invitational in dominating fashion hosted by Quinsigamond CC over the weekend. The Warriors defeated Holyoke CC, 62-27 on Friday before winning 95-57 on Saturday vs. Bristol CC.

Massasoit upped its record to 13-6 on the season with the pair of convincing wins and is now 10-1 on the year against Division III opponents.

"Defense was the key for us this weekend," head coach Mark Brathwaite said. "Our defense was very aggressive and it helped lead to easy points. We also got up and down the court quickly offensively, which was started by our defensive effort."

Fredi Lawson (Boston/J.E. Burke HS) averaged 25.5 points and 16.5 rebounds for the weekend with a pair of double-double showings. Lawson has now posted a double-double in eight straight games.

Marina Palladino (Carver) averaged 17.5 points per game for the weekend along with 6.5 assists.

Massasoit 62, Holyoke 27
Tiana McQueen (Mattapan/Boston English HS) scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Warriors to a 62-27 victory.

McQueen finished 9-of-16 from the floor and pulled down 12 rebounds for a double-double. Joining McQueen with a double-double of her own was Lawson, who finished with 17 points and 17 rebounds.

Palladino also reached double figures with 15 points, while Tianna Johnson (Brockton/New Mission HS) dished out 11 assists and grabbed six boards in the win.

The Massasoit defense held HCC to 14 points in the first half and 13 in the second half.

Massasoit 95, Bristol 57
Big showings from Lawson and Johnson helped the Warriors explode for 58 second half points as Massasoit cruised to a 95-57 victory against Bristol CC.

Lawson posted a team-best 34 points on 17-of-25 shooting and 16 rebounds, while Johnson recorded her third triple-double of the season. She netted 13 points, had 17 assists and 11 rebounds.

Palladino poured in 20 points and dished out 10 assists, while Ashley Andrade (Randolph) had 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

Massasoit only led 37-32 at the half, but ran away in the second stanza, scoring 58 points after intermission compared to just 25 by the Bees.

Massasoit closes out the regular season on Tuesday, hosting Quinsigamond CC at 6 p.m.
