Massasoit Men’s Soccer Hosts Northeast District Tournament

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- The Massasoit Community College men's soccer team is set to host the NJCAA Northeast District Tournament, beginning this Saturday at 10 a.m. The Warriors will take on Mercer County CC in the first game, followed by a clash between Monroe College and Monroe CC at 1 p.m. on Warrior Field.

The winners of the two Saturday contests will meet in the District Championship, slated for 11 a.m. on Sunday. The tournament champion will earn an automatic bid to the NJCAA Nationals.

Location: All games will be played at Warrior Field on the Massasoit campus in Brockton, Mass.

Tournament Tidbits
• Sunday's champion will advance to the NJCAA Nationals hosted by Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz., from Nov. 17-20.

• Massasoit is the lone repeat from the 2013 District Tournament. Last season's field included Bryant & Stratton, ASA College and Burlington County along with the Warriors.

• Each team in the tournament has played one of the other qualifiers during the regular season. Massasoit is the lone school to play all three opponents in 2014.

How The Warriors Got Here
Massasoit defeated CCRI in penalty kicks on Nov. 1 to claim its ninth Region XXI Championship in the past 11 years. The game was tied 1-1 after regulation and two overtime periods, but the Warriors prevailed in PKs, 4-2 on a rain-soaked Warrior Field. Goalie Andre Reis made two big saves following the lone PK miss by Massasoit and Fabio Cula buried the game-winner to give the Warriors the victory.• The Warriors are 1-2 against the tournament field, falling to both Monroe College (L, 3-0) and Monroe CC (L, 2-1) before defeating Mercer County (W, 2-0) during the regular season.

• Massasoit has rallied off a 10-match unbeaten streak to reach the Northeast Districts. Over the last 10 matches (9-0-1) the Warriors have outscored their opponents 39-9. Massasoit last loss was on Sept. 24 at Bunker Hill CC (3-1).

• Forward Joel Lobo tops the team with 22 goals on the season and 17 of those goals have come in the last 10 matches.

MERCER COUNTY VIKINGS

Region 19 Qualifier

How The Vikings Got Here
Mercer claimed the Region 19 crown by narrowly defeating Harcum College, 1-0, on Nov. 2 at Ocean County College. The lone goal of the contest was scored by Viking Anthony Tweh in the 15th minute of action. In fact, it marked the first goal of the season for Tweh.

• Mercer is 0-1 against the tournament field, with the loss coming at Massasoit (L, 2-0) back on Oct. 18.

• The Vikings have won 11 of their last 12 matches, with four of those victories being shutouts, including the 1-0 victory against Harcum in the Region 19 Championship.

• Mercer boasts a balanced offensive lineup as 12 players have scored two-or-more goals on the season. Jared Rogers tops the team in goals (9) and points (23) on the year.

#13 MONROE CC TRIBUNES

How The Tribunes Got Here
The Tribunes captured the Region 3 Championship in convincing fashion, 4-0, against Mercyhurst North East. Leading scorer David Antunez netted a goal in each half as Monroe CC improved its unbeaten streak to five matches.

• Monroe CC is 1-0 against tournament opponents, defeating Massasoit (W, 3-2) at home back on Sept. 13.

• The Tribunes have hit their stride offensively as of late. Over the last six matches, Monroe CC is 5-0-1 and has scored 30 goals over that span.

• MCC boasts three players with 10-plus goals on the season, led by David Antunez with 18. On the year, the Tribunes average 3.3 goals per game, finding the back of the net 66 times in 20 matches.

MONROE COLLEGE MUSTANGS
Overall Record: 9-3
Region 15 Qualifier

How the Mustangs Got Here
The Mustangs exploded in the second half to score all five of their goals to take the Region 15 Championship with ease over ASA College. Five different Mustangs scored as the flurry of goals all came in a 17-minute span after intermission.

• Monroe College is 1-0 against the tournament field, with the victory coming at Massasoit (W, 3-0) back on Sept. 20.

• Since starting the season 1-2, the Mustangs have captured wins in eight of the last nine matches with the lone loss coming to Nassau CC (L, 3-2). Six of the eight victories have been shutouts of the opposition.

• For the season, Monroe is averaging 3.2 goals per game and has scored two-or-more goals in every match but one. Lucas Santos tops the team with seven goals on the season.
