SOUTHWICK, Mass. ---- The Massasoit golf team placed second at the 2019 Region 21 Golf Tournament held at The Ranch Golf Club and sophomore Chris McMorrow (Weymouth) qualified individually for the NJCAA Nationals to round out the second day of tournament action.
The defending regional champ Warriors were deadlocked with Holyoke heading into the second and final round of the two-day tournament. Unfortunately, the Cougars turned it on as tourney medalist Kyle Richter fired a 79 to lead HCC to its first regional title since 2009.
The Warriors, however, will be represented at the NJCAA Nationals, held at Chautauqua Country Club in New York, by Chris McMorrow. The sophomore will be making his second appearance at Nationals after qualifying with the team a season ago and marks the third-straight year Massasoit will make the trip to Nationals. The top five best individual scores outside of the regional champion qualify for the four-day NJCAA National Championship.
McMorrow finished in third place individually, just one stroke off of first place, posting a two-day score of 167. The Weymouth native shot an 87 on the first day, facing some tough wind conditions and followed up with an even 80. His 167 total marks the fourth-lowest total at the regional tournament in program history.
"I am proud of the way the guys battled," head coach Mike Croatti said. "It was not easy conditions out there. The wind gave a British Open feel to this tournament and there was a links-style feel to the golf course. I was very impressed with how the guys showed mental toughness to overcome the adversity they were facing out there. I am especially proud of Chris McMorrow who was able to secure back-to-back invites to the NJCAA National Tournament. He has had a great career and hopefully will be the kick starter to help catapult the program to future success."
Joining McMorrow in the top-10 was Ricky Sherlock of Whitman, who finished with a 188, shooting a 97 on day one, followed by a 91.
The four-day NJCAA National Championship starts on Tuesday, June 4th.
