Men’s Golf Geared Up For Regional Tournament

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- The Massasoit Community College men's golf team is set to compete in the two-day Region XXI Tournament hosted at the New England Country Club in Bellingham, Mass., beginning Tuesday.

First-year head coach Chris Ballerini will send four freshmen golfers to represent the Warriors, as a total of six junior college will take part in the tournament.

"We are excited to compete at the regional tournament," Ballerini said. "I think the guys that have shown signs of improvement throughout the season and this tournament will give them a chance to showcase their talents on the course."

The top team and five additional golfers from other Region XXI schools will advance to the NJCAA National Championship, hosted by Jamestown CC at the Chautauqua Country Club in Chautauqua, N.Y., from June 2-5.

Leading the four freshmen golfers will be Mike Cappadona (Foxboro) who has averaged a team-low score of 81.5 on the season. Cappadona tied for fourth in his first match of the season, which coincidentally was at the New England Country Club, when he fired a season-best 80.

The No. 2 golfer for the Warriors is Mike Thibeault of Halifax. The Silver Lake Regional grad owns an average of 87.6 on the links. He shot a season-low 84 at Chicopee Country Club back on May 5, good for a seventh place tie.

Cam Cox of Kingston has produced the third lowest team average on the year, 98.3, while Mike Barry posts a 112.7 score for the season.

In addition to Massasoit, other junior colleges competing include: MassBay CC, Dean College, CCRI, Springfield Tech and Holyoke CC.
