Massasoit Men's Hoops Earns Road Win At Northern Essex, 97-84

HAVERHILL, Mass. ---- Trey Jones (Mattapan) scored a team-high 26 points, 19 coming in the second half to help the Massasoit men's basketball team pick up its first win of the season with a 97-84 road victory at Northern Essex on Thursday.

Jones finished with a double-double, distributing 11 assists to even up Massasoit's record at 1-1 on the season.

"We did a couple of different things strategically both offensively and defensively tonight," head coach Jim Stapleton said. "We did not want to make the game a track meet so we mixed up our half court defenses and worked out offense in the half court also."

The Warriors, which led from start to finish, held a 12-point cushion at half, 52-40, largely due to the play of Antonio Ferriera (Stoughton). Ferriera, who finished with a double-double of his own with 22 points and 10 rebounds, netted 15 prior to intermission.

Also reaching the 20-point plateau was Chris Green (Taunton) who scored 21 points and had seven helpers and was a crucial piece in breaking the aggressive all-game press by Northern Essex.

"Chris had a great game for us tonight. He was critical in breaking the press, guarded (Northern Essex) best player and played all 40 minutes of the game," Stapleton said.

In the second half, Northern Essex would cut the deficit to five points late in the contest, but Nivaldo Gomes (Orlando, Fla.) made some critical rebounds and Jones drained multiple crucial buckets to give the Warriors the 13-point win.

Gomes finished with five points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Anthony Conway (Boston) netted 13 points and had eight rebounds, while Jashawn Houston (Stoughton) chipped in with seven points (all in the first half) off the bench.

"It was a good win on the road against a good team. We stuck to the script, brok the press in a simple manner and ran our simple plays to pick up our first win today," Stapleton said.
