Baseball Clinches Top Seed With Doubleheader Sweep

BOSTON ---- Two strong pitching performances from David Tarr (Easton) and Luke Nagle (Pembroke) led the Massasoit Community College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep at Bunker Hill CC, earning 4-2 and 11-1 victories on Monday.

With the two wins, the Warriors improve to 18-9 on the season and clinched the top seed in the Region XXI Tournament hosted by Massasoit in Brockton from May 9-11.

"It wasn't a hitters day, it was very damp and cold," head coach Tom Frizzell said. "We got hits when we needed them. You have to say a lot about the outings by Tarr and Nagle. They both wanted the ball and they did a good job for us."

Game 1: Massasoit 4, Bunker Hill 2
David Tarr went the distance with eight strikeouts as Massasoit claimed game one of the doubleheader, 4-2.

Massasoit put up a crooked number in the top of the second, thanks to RBI base hits by Scott O'Brien (East Bridgewater), Trevor Packard (Brockton) and Travis Ritchie (Taunton).

BHCC answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Warriors.

The Warriors added an insurance run in the fifth when David Murphy (Plymouth) knocked in Packard with a RBI double.

In the last of the sixth the Bulldogs put a real threat together against Tarr, loading the bases with one out. But the southpaw recorded back-to-back punch-outs to escape the threat.

Tarr improved to 3-2 on the season, going seven innings, and yielding only two runs off four hits.

Joe Walsh (Taunton) had two hits, including a double, while Packard went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Game 2: Massasoit 11, Bunker Hill 1 (6 innings)
Massasoit scored seven runs in the top of the sixth to put game two out of reach and earn the doubleheader sweep.

Nagle did his part both on the mound at the plate for the Warriors. The sophomore went all six innings on the hill, surrendering just one run off four hits with four strikeouts and no walks. At the plate, Nagle highlighted the big sixth with a bases clearing double.

With the victory, Nagle is now 4-1 on the season.

Massasoit plays at Northern Essex on Tuesday. The game is slated for 3:30 p.m.
