Massasoit Baseball Drops Pair Of Close Games To Open 2014 Season

VERO BEACH, Fla. ---- The Massasoit CC baseball team would strike first in both games on Friday, but saw those early leads slip away, falling to Ontario Academy 5-4 and Miami-Hamilton University (Ohio) 5-3 to open the 2014 season at the Historical Dodgertown Complex.

Massasoit (0-2) still has seven games to play on its Spring Break trip and will take on Ontario Academy on Saturday at 1 p.m ET.

"We just had a bad day of baseball today," head coach Tom Frizzell said. "We have seven more games to go on this trip and tomorrow we will work really hard on our defense. We need to play better overall and find ways to drive in runs. We are playing a very challenging schedule down here and it doesn't get any easier."

Game 1: Ontario Academy 5, Massasoit 4
In the first game of the 2014 campaign, the Warriors had an opportunity to tie the score in the top of the seventh but were unable to capitalize, stranding a runner on first and falling 5-4 to Ontario Academy.

"We had RBI opportunities throughout the game, we were just unable to take advantage," Frizzell said. "We didn't get that big hit when we needed it."

The Warriors would strike first in the game, pushing across a run in the top of the second inning.

That slim lead would not last long, as Ontario would respond with a three-spot in the last of the second frame.

After Ontario expanded its lead to 5-1, Massasoit tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth, but left the bases loaded.

Trailing 5-3, in the seventh, the Warriors pulled within a run, but could get no closer dropping the season opener.

For the game, the Warriors would strand seven runners on base.

Matt Levasseur (Milton) produced a strong freshman debut, going 2-for-4 with an RBI at the plate. Trevor Packard (Brockton) scored two runs in the loss.

On the mound, freshman Sam Devine (Taunton/Coyle Cassidy HS) was a bright spot, firing two scoreless frames out of the Warrior bullpen.

Game 2: Miami-Hamilton University 5, Massasoit 3
Reigning NJCAA All-American Joe Walsh (Taunton) went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, but the Warriors were unable to cash in on scoring opportunities, falling 5-3 to Miami-Hamilton University.

Just as the Warriors did in the first game of the day, they would strike first scoring twice in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Miami-Hamilton fought back to even up the score in the fourth and take the lead for good in the fifth inning of action.

Massasoit would again have plenty of scoring chances, but left two runners on base in the third and sixth innings, along with stranding the bases loaded in the fourth.

Starter David Tarr (Easton/Cardinal Spellman HS) went the first five innings for the Warriors, allowing three earned runs. The sophomore southpaw struck out six in his first appearance of the season.

Walsh recorded a double as part of his three hit day at the plate and added one RBI.
