Women’s Soccer Places Six Student-Athletes on All-Region 21 Teams

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- A total of six student-athletes from the Massasoit women's soccer team earned NJCAA All-Region 21 honors, featuring forward Anya Welch-Batstone (Avon) and midfielder Dineida Gomes (Brockton) on the first team.

Welch-Batstone produced another scoring machine season, leading the 2019 squad in goals (21) and points (47) for the season. She recorded four games of three-or-more goals and finished her career with 42 goals and 14 assists for 98 points.

Gomes started all 14 games, primarily at outside midfield. The sophomore placed second on the team in goals (6) and tied for second in points with 14.

Massasoit was represented on the second team by a pair of freshmen in Shelby Newcomb (Whitman) and Gisele Digirolamo (Dedham).

Newcomb saw time as both a goalie and defender in her first year in Green and White. She tallied one goal and three assists, while making 63 saves in a goal in eight games between the pipes.

Digirolamo was a central defender for the Warriors, starting all 14 matches, dishing out assist and helping a Massasoit defense produce three shutouts on the year.

Rounding out the accolades for Massasoit were two more freshmen that earned honorable mention awards in Becca Chandler (Marshfield) and Stefania Dos Santos (Brockton).

Chandler saw time all over the field, starting all 14 matches on the season. She led the team in assists (8) and added three goals to finish tied for second on the Warriors in points with 14.

Dos Santos, primarily a defender, also started every game and scored a goal in her first season at Massasoit.

Massasoit finished the year 6-8 overall and qualified for the Region 21 Tournament, falling to Bristol Community College in tournament semifinals.
