HCC's Two Early Goals Sink Women's Soccer, 2-1

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Holyoke's Kayla La Fortune netted a pair of goals in the first six minutes of action, which proved to be the difference as the Cougars held off the Massasoit women's soccer team, 2-1, on Tuesday at Warrior Field.

La Fortune scored in the third minute of a shot that deflected off a Warrior defender to the back of the net for the game's first goal. She netted her second goal in at the 5:58 mark.

Despite falling into an early 2-0 hole, Massasoit responded when Anya Welch-Batstone (Avon) intercepted a Holyoke pass and went to goal, scoring at the 11:26 mark for her 16th goal of the season and 37th of her career.

That was all the scoring the game would see, with all three goals coming within the first 12 minutes of play. The next 78 minutes saw each team provide scoring chances, but neither able to cash in against each squad's goalies.

Massaosit's best chances to tie the score came in a two-minute spurt late in the second half, when both Welch-Batstone and Felisberta Tavares (Brockton) rocketed shots on net, but HCC keeper Hannah Garon made a pair of great saves to hold off the Warrior offense.

Shelby Newcomb (Whitman) made nine saves in net for the Warriors, which are off until Tuesday, Oct. 15th, when they host Bristol at 3:30 PM.
