Women’s Soccer Shuts Down Springfield Tech, 3-0

 

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ---- The Massasoit women's soccer team claimed its sixth win in its last seven games on Saturday, topping Springfield Tech, 3-0, in Region XXI action.

Massasoit (6-3, 5-1) received first half goals from Zhandali Fontes (Taunton) and Kayla Gomes (Halifax) to hold a 2-0 edge at the break. Olivia Curtin (Abington) recorded assists on each of the goals.

In the second half, Gina Nutting (Rockland) rocketed a free kick to the back of the net to account for the Warriors' third goal on the afternoon.

Laura Ellis (Raynham) and Stephanie Villanueva (Whitman) combined on the shutout in goal as the Massasoit defense allowed just two STCC shots.

WHY MASSASOIT WON: STCC was unable to break through against the Massasoit defense, attempting only two shots, with one coming on goal. The Warriors, on the other hand, scored two early goals and commanded play for most of the game.

ONE-TWO-PUNCH: Kayla Gomes and Zhandali Fontes scored the first two goals of the match for the Warriors in the win over STCC. Gomes now has 14 goals on the season, while Fontes has found the back of the net nine times for a total of 23 goals between the two forwards.

SHUT DOWN DEFENSE: Over the last seven games, Massasoit has only surrendered three goals and totaled five shutouts.
