Warriors Cruise To 5-1 Victory Over Bunker Hill

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Kayla Gomes (Halifax) scored a goal 25 seconds into the match as the Massasoit women's soccer team would cruise to a 5-1 victory vs. Bunker Hill at Warrior Field on Monday.

Massasoit (7-3, 6-1 Region XXI) held a commanding 4-0 lead at intermission. Gomes scored the first two goals, both coming in the first seven minutes of action, while Haley Wells (Whitman) and Zhandali Fontes (Taunton) accounted for the third and fourth goals of the half.

Olivia Curtin (Abington) registered the assist on the first goal, while Shauna Fitzpatrick (Whitman) added an assist and Wells contributed two helpers of her own.

Katie Arnold (Weymouth) connected for her first goal of the season, off a cross from Wells, in the 76th minute to round out the scoring for the Warriors.

Bunker Hill snuck in a goal in the 83rd minute, breaking up Massasoit's chance for a third-straight shutout.

WHY MASSASOIT WON: Kayla Gomes took the wind out of BHCC's sails early, scoring just 25 seconds into the match. From then on, the Warriors' attacking style and strong defensive play was too much for the visiting Bulldogs.

GOALS FOR GOMES: Gomes posted her fifth multi-goal game of the season after netting a pair in Monday's victory. The Halifax native now leads Region XXI and ranks third amongst all NJCAA Division III players with 16 goals on the season.

SWEEPER SETS UP TEAMMATES: Haley Wells, the starting sweeper for Massasoit, finished with a goal and two assists vs. BHCC. Her first assist was on a free kick when she booted a pass up the sideline that Gomes finished to put the Warriors up 2-0. Her second helper came on a cross to Arnold for the fifth and final goal of the day for the Green and White.
