BROCKTON, Mass. ---- A strong defensive effort led the Massasoit women's soccer team past the Monroe College JV squad, 3-0, at Warrior Field on Sunday afternoon.

Zhandali Fontes (Taunton) scored the first goal of the contest in the 35th minute and Kayla Gomes (Halifax) added two insurance goals in the second half, set up Haley Wells (Whitman) and Olivia Curtin (Abington) to account for the scoring.

Laura Ellis (Raynham) made two stops in net to post the shutout for Massasoit (2-2).

"We need to work on our finishing in practice, because we had some opportunities we didn't capitalize on," head coach Jim Stapleton said. "But overall I thought we played pretty good, especially in the second half, and our defense performed well all game for us."

WHY MASSASOIT WON: Massasoit was able to keep the pressure on Monroe, especially in the second half. The Warriors held a 24 to seven advantage in overall shots, with 15 coming on net.

KEY PLAY OF THE MATCH: Leading 1-0, Massasoit's Kayla Gomes beat the Monroe keeper in the 60th minute to provide some breathing room for the Warriors.

BACK-TO-BACK SHUTOUTS: Laura Ellis made two stops to record her second shutout of the week. The Warriors have now gone over 198 minutes without yielding a goal.

GOMES' GOAL STREAK TO FOUR: Kayla Gomes kept her goal-scoring streak in tact, netting her fifth and sixth goals of the season. The freshman has found the back of the net in all four matches on the year and recorded her second straight multi-goal performance. In addition to her team-best six goals, Gomes also has three assists.
