2013 Women's Soccer Season Recap

BROCKTON, Mass. --- When fall tryouts started up this past August, Massasoit women's soccer head coach Ruben Teixeira only had seven players come out for the team on the first day of practice. Despite the uncertainty at the beginning of the season, the Warriors were able to far exceed expectations and advance to the New England Region XXI Finals for just the third time in the last 15 seasons.

Overall Record: 6-9-0
Division Record: 6-3-0
Region XXI Record: 6-6-0

The magical season came to an end last Saturday, as the Warriors fell 2-0 in the Region XXI Finals to eventual District Champion Holyoke Community College.

"I'm really proud of the girls the way they preserved throughout the season," head coach Ruben Teixeira said. "We had some high points and some low points, but I was very impressed with the team's effort throughout the year. It was great to make the region finals, because the girls earned it, we just came up a little short in the end."

STARTED OFF HOT: The Warriors started the season strong, winning four of their first five matches. All four victories were shutouts as Massasoit outscored the opposition 20-3 during that span.

DID WELL VS DIVISION: In divisional games, Massasoit finished 6-3, with the only three losses coming to HCC. In those nine matches, the Warriors scored 28 times and allowed just eight goals.

SIX MAKE ALL-REGION: A total of six Warriors made the New England All-Region teams, featuring Melanie Thompson, Kristin Reardon, Zhandali Fontes and Katie Arnold on the first team. Stephanie Villanueva and Ashley Westover earned second-team honors. It marked the second-most first-team honorees in program history and most since 1990.

WARRIORS POST FIVE SHUTOUTS: Thanks to goaltender Kristin Reardon and a strong defense, the Warriors were able to post five clean sheets on the season, three better than the 2012 campaign.
