Warriors advance to Region 21 Finals on Sunday vs UCAP/Springfield Tech

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. ---- The nationally-ranked Massasoit women's basketball team topped Bunker Hill, 97-34, on Saturday afternoon in the Region 21 Tournament Semifinals hosted by BHCC.

With the victory, Massasoit advances to the Region 21 Finals for the first time since 2013-14, the only time the Warriors have captured the league's tournament crown. In the finals, the Warriors will face the winner of UConn-Avery Point/Springfield Tech with tipoff set for 12 PM on Sunday at Bunker Hill.

The Warriors, ranked No. 2 nationally, now boast a 20-2 overall record, reaching the 20-win mark for the first time since the 1997-98 season.

On Saturday, Massasoit produced a balanced and efficient offensive effort, as five players scored in double figures with the Warriors shooting 54.1 percent (40 for 74) from the floor. The Warriors were also unselfish with the basketball, totaling 26 assists on 40 made baskets.

Nina Robinson led the Warriors with 18 points on 9 of 13 shooting paired with 11 rebounds for a double-double. Fellow sophomore post Shania Osborne also recorded a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) of her own, while Ky'Jae Hargrove (17 points), Daja Polks (16) and Destanee Morales (14) all reached double digits.

Massasoit started off to a slow start, leading just 10-6 with 3:35 left in the opening quarter.

From there, it was all Massasoit, as the high-powered Warrior offense exploded on a 28-2 run, holding BHCC (9-13) without a field goal over an 11-minute span between the first and second quarter.

Massasoit led 46-14 at the break and outscored the Bulldogs 25-0 in the third quarter to cruise to victory.

RETURN TO THE FINALS: Massasoit returns to the Region 21 Finals for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign. It marks the sixth time the Warriors have reached the finals in program lore, with the only region title taking place back five years ago.

CAGING BULLDOGS: The Warriors swept all three meetings vs the Bulldogs during the season and have now won 10-straight contests vs. BHCC.
