CHARLESTOWN, Mass. ---- Four Warriors reached double figures, but nationally ranked Roxbury took advantage of some costly turnovers as the Massasoit women's basketball team fell in the Region 21 Semifinals, 81-66, on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Bunker Hill.
Massasoit (8-14) was led by sophomore Sienna Johnson's 17 points in her final game with the Warriors. Sasha Gagnon netted 13 points, including a pair of 3s, and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Sierra Johnson (13 points) and Courtney Foley (12 points) rounded out their Massasoit careers also scored in double digits.
Roxbury (17-6), which advances to the Region 21 Finals to face UConn-Avery Point on Sunday, was led offensively by Destiny Hurt with 24 points. Charee Osborne added 18 points and Kayla Kelley chipped in with 11 points in the victory.
The Tigers led wire-to-wire and jumped out early in the first quarter, thanks to five made 3-pointers, three coming from Kelley. Massasoit trailed 24-15 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, neither team could get much going offensively, as RCC led by nine at the break 34-25.
In the third quarter, Massasoit made the game interesting as it pulled in with six points, 49-43, on a Sierra Johnson jumper with 1:14 left in the quarter.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, RCC closed out the final minute with a 6-0 run, featuring a four-point-play by Hurt with 2.4 seconds left and held on to knock off Massasoit for the fourth time this season.
