Massasoit Women’s Hoops Falls at UCAP in Opener, 89-81

GROTON, Conn. ---- Sophomore Natascha Elias (Brockton) poured in a team-high 27 points, but the Massasoit women's basketball team could not dig itself out of a big first half deficit, falling on the road to the University of Connecticut at Avery Point, 89-81, on Saturday.

Massasoit (0-1) fell behind the Pointers 48-30 in the first half, as UCAP scored 28 in the second quarter.

Following intermission, the Warriors would pull within six points toward the end of the third quarter, outscoring the Pointers, 27-19 in the period. Unfortunately, the Warriors would not get any closer the rest of the way, falling by eight in their first game of the season.

"After a tough first half, we really came out and played a great second half," head coach Colie Trawick said in her first game guiding the Warriors. "We made a big run in the third to get back in the game after being down 18 at the half. We just came up a little short."

Elias buried six 3-pointers en route to her 27 points, leading a group of four players in double figures. Freshman Monica Knight (Halifax) posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Geornaisha Silva-Moore and Sienna Johnson, both from Brockton, each added 11 points in the loss.

Tati Dias (Brockton) netted nine points and dished out nine assists for the Warriors, which are now off until Thursday when they host Bunker Hill at 6 PM at the Asiaf Field House.
