Softball Opens 2016 Season Thursday At Dean College

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- The Massasoit Community College softball team is set to begin the 2016 campaign with a doubleheader slated at Dean College on Thursday.

The Warriors will be led by first-year head coach Jordan McDermott, an East Bridgewater native who played collegiately at Bridgewater State.

McDermott inherits a team that went 5-15 a season ago and returns a pair on sophomore infielders in Kelly Cronin (Weymouth) and Sami Murray (Rockland).

Cronin, who is slated to start at shortstop for the Warriors, hit a team-best .381 during her freshman season and tied for a team-high with 11 RBI. Murray will be Cronin's double-play partner, manning second base after seeing time both in the infield and outfield last season.

The corner infield slots will showcase Ashley Westover (Stoughton) at first and Jacki Sloan (Rockland) at third, while Gabby Boutin (Middleboro) and Liv Curtin (Abington) will serve as the team's catcher and pitcher.

The outfield will feature three more newcomers in Payton Cavacco (Plymouth), Steph Collyer (Rockland) and Taylor Coletti (Whitman) will be on patrol.

The Warriors have 18 regular season games on the schedule, with the home opener slated for Sunday, a doubleheader against NHTI set to start at 2:15 PM.
