Massasoit Softball Slugs Past Dean College, 14-11

ROCKLAND, Mass. ---- The Massasoit CC softball team busted out the bats on Tuesday afternoon to the tune of season-high totals in runs and hits as the Warriors topped divisional rival Dean College, 14-11, at Rockland High School.

The Warriors finished with a season-best 12 hits, as sophomore Ashley Pitts (Rockland) and freshman Kelly Cronin (Weymouth) each went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Pitts also walked twice and scored three runs, while Cronin touched home twice and knocked in three.

Pamela Falcon (Holbrook) added a two-hit game and scored twice, while Marrissa Spivey (Brockton) and Sami Murray (Rockland) each knocked in a pair in the victory. In addition, Alex Pohl (Middleboro) scored three times and Kristen Gardner (Rockland) scored twice.

In fact, eight of the nine starters for the Warriors scored a run and seven of night recorded at least one hit.

The Warriors raced out the gates, scoring five times in the opening frame, featuring a two-run double off the bat of Murray.

Dean answered back, putting up crooked numbers in the third and four frames totaling eight runs to own an 8-5 advantage entering the bottom of the fourth.

The scoring pendulum swayed back in favor of Massasoit as the Green and White touched home five times in the fourth and three more times in fifth inning. Pitts, Pohl and Falcon each scored in both big innings for the Warriors.

Kelsey Whiting (1-2) earned the win in the circle for the Warriors. The righty went the distance and struck out a career-high eight in the victory.

The win marked the first of the season for Massasoit, improving to 1-8 on the year. Dean slipped to 2-3 overall. Game two of the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness with the Bulldogs holding an 11-7 lead after four innings of action.
