Men’s Soccer Drops Season Opener at Mercer County, 4-1

TRENTON, New Jersey ---- The Mercer County Vikings scored three times in the first half to defeat the visiting Massasoit Warriors, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon.

Mercer improved to 4-0 on the young season, while the Warriors dropped to 0-1.

"We were very disorganized in the first half," head coach Rui Estrela said. "I thought in the second half we played much, much better and played hard. We just had some miscommunication early on which led to some easy scoring chances for (Mercer)."

Freshman Charlie Swann (England) struck in the 55th minute for his first collegiate goal, to account for the Warriors lone tally on the scoreboard.

Four different Vikings found the back of the net as Mercer has now outscored its competition 14-2 during the 2017 season.

"Mercer was very organized in the back and possessed the ball well," Estrela said. "Seeing this level of competition today was an eye opener for some of the new guys. We can compete with teams like Mercer if we stay focused for all 90 minutes. Today, we didn't do that."

Both Massasoit and Mercer County were amongst the teams that received votes outside the NJCAA Top-20 Men's Soccer National Poll.

The Warriors stay on the road in New Jersey to face Bergen Community College on Sunday at 11AM.
