Men’s Soccer Treks To No. 2 Monroe College For District Semifinals

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- The reigning Region 21 Champion Massasoit men's soccer team will face nationally ranked and undefeated Monroe College in New Rochelle, NY, in the first round of the Northeast Districts on Saturday at 11 AM.

The Warriors (10-4-2) are coming off a 3-1 victory against CCRI to claim their ninth Region 21 crown in 11 seasons under head coach Rui Estrela. In the win, Deivys D'Almeida (New Bedford) produced a career day, scoring two goals and assisting on another to give the Warriors the championship. For his efforts, D'Almeida was named NJCAA Division I Men's Soccer Player of the Week.

Offensively, Sidney Cardoso (Portugal) leads Massasoit in goals (19) and points (44) and is tied with Ienik Spencer (Pawtucket, R.I.) with a team-high six assists.

Massasoit has turned it on in the second half of the season, posting an 8-1-1 tally in the last 10 matches, including a five-match unbeaten streak, featuring three straight victories.

Monroe (14-0-0), ranks No. 2 in the most recent NJCAA poll and topped ASA-New York to capture the Region 15 title.

The Mustangs have been an absolute powerhouse during the 2016 campaign, allowing only three goals in 14 matches (0.21 per game) to total 11 shutouts. In fact two of the three goals came in the first three matches of the season for Monroe, only allowing one goal since Sept. 3. The lone goal allowed in the last 13 matches came in a 15-1 drubbing of Bunker Hill on Oct. 1.

In addition, Monroe has been a scoring machine, netting 82 goals (5.86 per game), led by Felipe Hideki's 18.

In the other semifinal matchup, Region 3 champion Monroe Community College and Region 19 champion Rowan Burlington County Community College will face off at 1:30 PM on Saturday.

The winners of each semifinal match will meet on Sunday at 1 PM.
