Massasoit CC Men’s Soccer Blazes Past CCRI, 6-0

WARWICK, R.I. ---- The Massasoit Community College men's soccer team continued its strong play in the early part of the 2013 season, blanking CCRI, 6-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

So far in 2013, Massasoit (2-0-1) has yet to allow a goal and outscoring the opposition 17-0 through three contests.

Torrey Medeiros (New Bedford, Mass.) made his second start in net for the Warriors, collecting five saves for his second clean sheet of the year.

Offensively, the Warriors were able to keep the pressure up and play at a high tempo all afternoon totaling 19 shots against the CCRI defense.

"I think the speed of our team played a real factor in today's match," head coach Rui Estrela said. "CCRI couldn't keep up with us and we were much quicker. Overall we possessed the ball very well today as an entire team. We had guys come off the bench and contribute and attacked with great speed."

Emerson Barros (Brockton, Mass) netted two more goals, giving him five for the week, while Joao Cardoso (Brockton, Mass.), John Corr (Brockton, Mass.), Ruben Varela (Canton, Mass.) and Gabriel Pereira-Gomes (Marlborough, Mass.) all found the back of the net in the victory.

Two Warriors, Joel Lobo (Brockton, Mass.) and Julio Gomes (Brockton, Mass.), each chipped in with a pair of assists to help the lead the Massasoit offense.

Coach Estrela was really impressed with the play of his three forwards and how his midfield helped keep possession of the ball throughout the match.

"I thought Joel, Joao and Emerson all played great up top for us. They were a bunch of workhorses for us," Estrela said. " And Pepe (Edmar Vieira) was outstanding in the midfield distributing the ball."

Next up for Massasoit is a home game that will be played in Taunton, Mass., on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Monroe CC.
