Navy Prep Nips Men’s Basketball, 55-53

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Trey Jones' (Mattapan) go-ahead beyond NBA range 3-point attempt hit the front of the rim as the Naval Prep Academy escaped with a 55-53 victory over the Massasoit men's basketball team on Thursday.

Trailing 55-53, Jahleel Moise (Brockton) stole an inbounds pass with 10.8 seconds left. After a timeout, the Warriors tried to get the ball to Jones. With the clock winding down, the sophomore launched a deep 3 that was just off the mark, dropping Massasoit to 5-8 on the season.

Jones finished with a game-high 17 points, including three 3-pointers. He added four assists and two steals to his stat line.

Overall Massasoit did a strong job on the boards, totaling 43 as five players totaled seven-plus rebounds in the loss. Moise pulled down 10 rebounds and added six blocks to top the Warriors in both categories.

Mike Ward (Brockton) finished with a career-high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting and corralled eight rebounds. Dashawn Brathwaite (Somerville) chipped in with eight points and eight boards.

Aidan Ryan (Carver) and Andrew Groh (Raynham) pulled down seven rebounds apiece as well.

Navy Prep was led by Louie Pillari, who finished with 15 points.

WHY MASSASOIT LOST: Despite totaling 43 rebounds, the Warriors could not pull down a board when they needed to in the game's final minute. Navy Prep corralled a pair of offensive rebounds, which allowed the visitors to milk the clock.

BIG NIGHT FOR BIG MIKE & BRATHWAITE: Both Mike Ward (15) and Dashawn Brathwaite (8) posted career-highs in points against Navy Prep. In addition, Brathwaite tallied a personal-best in rebounds with eight.
