Men's Basketball Falls In Overtime Classic To MassBay, 106-105

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Rayshaw Matthews sank a free throw with 3.2 seconds left in overtime to give MassBay CC a 106-105 win over the Massasoit men's basketball team in an instant classic at the Asiaf Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

Massasoit (1-2) led 93-90 with 1.0 second remaining in regulation and appeared to have the game in hand. The Buccaneers (6-0) set up a sideline out-of-bounds play, and Matthews caught a pass at the top of the key and buried the game-tying 3-pointer to send the contest to overtime.

The Warriors jumped out early, leading by five points in the extra session as Antonio Ferreira (Stoughton/Stoughton HS) buried a 3-pointer and Jashawn Houston (Randolph/Randolph HS) sank a midrange jumper on their first two possessions.

With 12 seconds remaining and the score tied at 105, Matthews drew a foul and made his second of two free throws to take the one-point edge.

Massasoit's Chris Green (Taunton/Bridgton Academy) had a chance to win the game as time expired, but his 3-point try hit the front rim, giving MassBay the victory.

Green, who played all 45 minutes of the contest, was a general on the floor all night and had to serve as the primary ball handler for much of the second half. Starting point guard, Trey Jones (Mattapan/Reading HS) fouled out with over 10 minutes to play in regulation. A total of four Warriors would foul out during the game.

Green finished the night with a game-high 30 points and went 13-for-16 at the foul line. The Taunton native added seven assists, five rebounds and two steals to his stat line.

In the first half, Massasoit built up a 12-point halftime lead, 59-47, as the Warriors shot a blistering 65.6 percent from the field making 21 of 32 shots and 8-of-15 from 3-point range.

However, MassBay was able to chip away and actually take the lead on Massasoit in the game's closing minutes of regulation. Clutch free throw shooting would allow the Warriors to retake the lead, but Matthews' heroics at the end of regulation and overtime proved to be the difference.

Joining Green in double figures were three other Warriors, including Jones (22 points), Ferreira (18 points) and Houston (18 points).

Jones shot 8-of-13 from the floor and made a trio of 3-pointers. Ferreira recorded his third double-double in as many games with 10 rebounds and four 3-point baskets and Houston finished 6-for-9 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from downtown off the bench.

For the game, Massasoit made 13-of-24 3-point attempts (54.2 percent), as Green, Jones, Houston and Ferreira all made three-or-more tries from long range.
