Baseball Falls to Northern Essex, 7-1

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Northern Essex defeated the Massasoit baseball team 7-1 at Colombo Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Massasoit returns to the diamond on Thursday, playing a doubleheader against Bunker Hill at 1 PM in Charlestown, Mass.

The Warrior offense was unable to cash in against NECC (18-10, 11-0) starter Evan Glew. The sophomore lefty put 11 runners on in seven innings of work, but Massasoit (12-12, 8-3) could only push across a single run in the eighth off an RBI single by Jimmy Lawless (Hull).

Massasoit finished the game with six hits, three coming from sophomore Dylan Ashburn (Norton).

On the mound, Jack DeCoste (East Sandwich) was saddled with the loss, dropping to 0-2 on the season. The righty went the first 4.1 innings, giving up four earned runs off six hits.

Tim DeCouto (Whitman) and Matt McGrath (Braintree) pitched well in relief, as the duo combined to allow only one earned run in 4.2 innings.

NECC broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second when Julio Leon launched a two-run homer. The Knights added three more runs in the fifth to extend their lead. A solo blast from Xavier Nunez in the seventh and an unearned run in the eighth rounded out the scoring.

The Knights swept the three-game season series against the Warriors.
