BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Sophomore Jake Stearns (Plymouth) pitched seven innings of perfect baseball to start off a pair of 10-0 victories against the MassBay Buccanners in a doubleheader at Colombo Field on Saturday.
The two wins upped Massasoit's record to 4-10 overall on the season.
Game 1: Masasoit 10, MassBay 0 – 7 Innings
Stearns (2-1) was phenomenal on the mound, punching out 13 batters in the seven-inning complete game effort facing the minimum 21 batters. The lefty did not allow a ball to leave the infield, using seven ground outs and one pop up to go along with his career-high strikeout total. Stearns struck out at least two batters in five of seven frames, including the side in the sixth.
Over his last three starts, Stearns has yielded only two earned runs off eight hits with 22 strikeouts in 20.2 innings for a 0.87 ERA during that stretch.
The sophomore starter received more than enough run support in Game 1, as the Warriors touched home at least once in all six innings at the plate.
Evan McSherry (Halifax), Tyler Morini (Plymouth) and Alex Carey (East Bridgewater) all posted two-hit games. Morini and Dylan Ashburn (Norton) each knocked in a pair, while Bryan Dwyer (Abington) scored three runs in the victory.
Game 2: Massasoit 10, MassBay 0 – 6 Innings
Mike Nader (Hollywood, Fla.) was no slouch on the mound in Game 2 following Stearns' perfection, firing a four-hit shutout as the Warriors earned the twinbill sweep.
Nader struck out five and did not walk a batter to improve to 1-1 on the season. The righty showcased some Greg Maddux like gold glove skills, totaling seven defensive assists and picking off three base runners.
The middle of the Massasoit order took care of business as Kevin Huscher (Middleboro), Bryan Dwyer (Abington) and Tyler Morini (Plymouth) accounted for eight of the team's 12 hits.
Huscher went 3-for-4, clubbing two doubles and scoring four runs. Morini went 3-for-4 as well with two RBI and Dwyer went a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish with a double and RBI.
