GROTON, Conn. --- Sophomore Alex Carey (East Bridgewater) rocketed a fourth-inning grand slam, but UConn Avery Point rallied on two different occasions to claim a seesaw scoring battle, 9-8, in Region 21 action.

The home run for Carey marked the first of his career and the first of the year for the Warriors as they fell to 2-8 on the season. Massasoit returns to the diamond on Saturday, with a doubleheader at Dean College slated to begin at Noon.

"It was a back and forth game," head coach Tom Frizzell said. "We had a 2-0 lead and an 8-5 lead but gave them both up and lost 9-8. Alex (Carey) had a big hit for us and Liam (Richmond) had a great pitching performance in relief for the third straight outing."

The Warriors jumped out 2-0 lead in the top of the first against the Pointers as Bryan Dwyer (Abington) roped an RBI triple and would later score on a ground out by Justin Martinho (Dighton).

UCAP responded quickly, putting a three-spot of its own in the last of the first as the advantage was short lived for the visiting Warriors.

After the Pointers scored twice in the bottom of the third, Massasoit answered with a six-run fourth, highlighted by the grand slam from Carey and two-run single by Dylan Ashburn (Norton) as the Warriors would retake the lead, 8-5

But again, the Pointers responded, touching home three times in the fourth and later used a seventh-inning sacrifice fly for what proved to be the game-winner as UCAP defeated Massasoit for the second time this season.

Massasoit finished with six hits as a team. Tyler Morini (Plymouth) and Dwyer each scored twice and added a hit in the loss.

Liam Richmond (Hingham) pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two and walking two. Scott Anderson (Hanover) was saddled with the loss.
