Massasoit Baseball Trio Recognized On All-Region Teams

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Dave Murphy (Plymouth), Al Carey (East Bridgewater) and Tom Protentis (Lakeville) of the Massasoit Community College baseball team were all recognized with All-Region XXI honors, recently announced by league officials.

Murphy and Carey were both named to the all-region first team and Protentis earned honorable mention accolades.

In his second season for the Warriors, Murphy became one of the top junior college players in New England. The sophomore shortstop finished in the region's top-10 in nine different offensive statistical categories as he started all 36 games for the Warriors. He hit an even .400 on the season to go along with .488 on base and .609 slugging percentages. Murphy led the region in hits (46) and extra-base hits (16) and tied for first with four homers. He also finished second in RBI with 30 for the season.

Carey served as the starting centerfielder and leadoff hitter for the Warriors. He hit .295 for the season and posted a .381 on-base percentage. His 13 walks finished tied for third in the region and he also finished fourth in hits (36) and tied for eighth in runs scored (21).

Protentis really came on strong for the Warriors in his second season donning the Green and White. After a rocky first start of the season, Protentis won four of his final five starts and did not allow more than two earned runs in any of those appearances. He finished the year with a record of 4-2, 2.80 ERA and totaled 37 strikeouts in 35.1 innings pitched. His strikeout total ranked fourth and win total tied for fifth in the region.
