Baseball Sweeps NHTI In Doubleheader

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Behind a pair of strong pitching performances from starters Zack Reid (Dighton) and Tom Protentis (Lakeville) to go along with some timely hitting, the Massasoit CC baseball team swept NHTI in a doubleheader on Sunday, 7-4 and 4-1.

 

With the two wins, Massasoit improves to 4-10 on the season. The Warriors host Quinsigamond CC on Monday.

 

Game 1: Massasoit 7, NHTI 4
Things started off rocky for the Warriors in game one, allowing three unearned runs in the top of the first inning. However, the Massasoit lineup responded touching home four times in the bottom of the opening frame and added three more runs later on to earn the win.

 

Trailing 3-0, the first five batters for Massasoit would reach base, featuring a RBI single by Evan Derochea (Raynham) and a two-run single by Nick Oliveira (New Bedford).

 

After NHTI knotted up the score at 4-all, Al Carey (East Bridgewater) was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the second. Carey was followed by consecutive doubles from Matt Leavasseur (Milton) and Dave Murphy (Plymouth) to retake the lead 6-4.

 

Massasoit tacked on a run in the third, when Joe Commesso (Bourne) came around and scored after reaching on a one-out single.

 

Reid earned the win for the Warriors to improve to 2-1 on the season. The righty went the distance, yielding only one earned run and four hits while strikeout out seven.

 

Commesso finished 2-for-3 at the plate, while Murphy and Oliveira each knocked in two in the victory.

 

Game 2: Massasoit 4, NHTI 1
Tom Protentis allowed just one run over six innings to help Massasoit earn the twinbill sweep of NHTI.

 

Protentis (1-1) surrendered just one run off six hits, to go along with four strikeouts in his first victory of the season. Brent Eaton (Kingston) pitched a scoreless seventh out of the bullpen to pick up the save.

 

At the plate, Oliveira knocked in two more runs for the Warriors, while Murphy and Chris Langley (Holbrook) each went 2-for-3.
