BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Corey Walker went the distance in game two against Southern New Hampshire JV to split a doubleheader on Sunday at Colombo Field. SNHU took game one, 9-7, before Massasoit captured game two, 8-2.
The split snapped Massasoit's six-game win streak as the Warriors now sit at 11-8 on the season. Massasoit will host Dean College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Walker, of North Attleboro, tossed a complete game six-hitter, yielding only one earned run with four strikeouts and no walks to earn his first collegiate victory.
"In game one, we did not play defense. When you don't play defense, you don't win," head coach Tom Frizzell said. "A positive was Corey Walker going the distance in game two and only allowing one earned run. We really needed that to bounce back after the game one loss."
Luke Nagle (Pembroke) had a stellar day at the plate, as the designated hitter went 7-for-8 over the two games on Sunday. During the four game weekend, Nagle hit a blistering .714 (10-for-14).
Travis Ritchie (Taunton) went 4-for-8 out of the leadoff slot and Pat Murray (Weymouth) added three more hits and two RBI on the day.
"Pat Murray continues to get big hits when it counts and Luke Nagle is on fire at the plate for us right now. This weekend sets us up nicely for a big week coming up, starting with Dean College on Tuesday," Frizzell said.
Game 1: SNHU 9, Massasoit 7
In a back-and-forth contest, SNHU put together the last big inning to take game one, 9-7.
David Murphy (Plymouth) blooped a RBI single to tie the game at 6-all and would later score on an error to give Massasoit a one-run lead in the bottom of the sixth.
That lead was short lived, as SNHU put up a three-spot in the top of the seventh and sent the Warriors down quietly in their final at bats.
Murphy finished 2-for-3 with his second homer in as many days. The shortstop also scored twice and knocked in three in the loss.
Ritchie had two hits and two RBI, while Nagle was 3-for-4.
Game 2: Massasoit 8, SNHU 2
A complete game effort from Walker and a six-run second inning led Massasoit to a 8-2 victory in the doubleheader night cap.
After the first two batters were retired in the last of the second, the Warriors had six consecutive batters reach, five on hits and four of those hits for extra bases to touch home six times in the frame. Murray, Matt Levasseur (Milton) and Nagle all doubled and Tom Protentis (Lakeville) capped the big two-out rally with his first collegiate homer, a two-run blast.
The first four hitters in the lineup had multi-hit games in Ritchie (2-for-4), Murray (2-for-4), Levasseur (2-for-4) and Nagle (3-for-3). In addition, Murray, Levasseur and Protentis all knocked in two runs in the victory.
