FITCHBURG, Mass. ----
The Massasoit Community College track and field team set eight school records and freshman Alex MacMillan (Brockton) qualified for the NJCAA Nationals in javelin at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational hosted by Fitchburg State on Saturday.

MacMillan fired the javelin 43.76 meters (143 feet, 7 inches) on his first attempt, surpassing the NJCAA National cut distance of 42.75 meters. The Brockton native and Cardinal Spellman High School product became the first male student-athlete from Massasoit to qualify for the national meet. His distance placed MacMillan 14th in the event.

In addition to earning a spot at the NJCAA National meet in Utica, N.Y., hosted by Mohawk Valley CC, MacMillan also set the school record in the javelin.

“It was a great first meet for us,” head coach Matt Jordan said. “Our team comradery was awesome and it was great to see everyone come together and cheer each other on. We had some great times and performances, especially from Alex and Nick (Vaughn), and it was a lot of fun. Now we need to just keep getting better and hopefully make more national cuts.”

Joining MacMillan in the javelin toss from Massasoit was sophomore Adam Blanchette (Brockton) and freshman Adam Conte (Halifax).

Another major highlight was the sprinting effort of freshman Nick Vaughn (Kingston). In his first race, Vaughn placed fourth overall in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.59. His fourth place finish tied for the best in program history along with setting the school record in the event. Kerry O’Neil finished in fourth place in the 5,000m race at the Regis Pride Classic in 2014.

Along with the javelin record by MacMillan, Massasoit set individual records in six other events:
Nick Vaughn (Kingston) – 100m (11.59; 4th), 200m (24.12; 12th)
Rokas Piragis (Brockton) – 400m (55.67; 30th)
