The 2019-20 season will mark John McDonough’s fourth overall season as an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Massasoit.

During the 2017-2018 campaign, while McDonough was an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Massasoit, the Warriors posted a record of 21-8 and captured the Region 21 NJCAA Championship.  Massasoit went on to participate in the NJCAA Division III National Tournament for the first time in program history. 

From 2012 to 2015, McDonough was the Head Boys' Basketball Coach at Mt. Hope High School (RI). McDonough guided Mt. Hope to a 51-24 record during his tenure, after inheriting a team that went a combined 32-135 over the previous eight seasons. In 2014, after advancing to the Division III Rhode Island State Finals, Mt. Hope became the only Division III program ever to qualify for the Elite Eight of the Rhode Island All-Division Open State Tournament.

From 2010 to 2012, McDonough was an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Massasoit. During that time, the Warriors posted an overall record of 40-11 and captured both the Region 21 Division II Championship and the Massachusetts Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC) Championship in 2010-11. The Warriors were ranked in the NJCAA Division II Top-10 polls and reached the 20-win plateau in both seasons. 

Prior to 2010, McDonough was the Head Boys’ Basketball Coach at Provincetown High School and at Seekonk High School.

From 1993 to 2002, McDonough played and coached in Europe.
