Cronin’s 18 Saves Not Enough In 4-0 Loss To CCRI

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Goalie Kelly Cronin (Weymouth) made 18 saves in net, but CCRI pulled away in the second half defeating the Massasoit women's soccer team, 4-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

The loss drops Massasoit to 5-6 on the season, while CCRI improves to 6-4.

CCRI netted its first goal at the 5:50 mark in the opening stanza, when Mercedes Faust headed home a cross from Kaitlin Murrin.

However, that was all the powerhouse offense of the Knights could muster against the Warrior defense and keeper Cronin in the first half as the game went to intermission with CCRI clinging to a 1-0 advantage.

In the second half the Warriors played more bend but not break defense, holding off an onslaught of CCRI shots. Unfortunately over a 10-minute span, from the 65th to the 75th minute, CCRI added three more goals as Faust, Riley McKitchen and Murrin all scored.

Cronin made 10 saves in the first half and added eight more in the second half. CCRI finished with 47 shots for the game, 22 on net.

Massasoit's offensive chances were few and far to come by, focusing primarily on the defensive end. Shelby Sprague (Stoughton) who accounted for three of the Warriors' four shots, rifled a free kick just high in the second half and had a corner kick that bounced off the keeper but was cleared by the Knights' defense.

Massasoit returns to Warrior Field on Friday with a 4 PM kickoff against Quinsigamond.
