Massasoit Women’s Soccer Places Six On All-Region Teams

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- A total of six Massasoit women's soccer student-athletes were selected to the All-Region XXI teams recently announced by the Region XXI office.

Massasoit, which finished the season 9-7 overall (7-4 Region XXI) and runners up in the Region XXI Championship, placed four players – Kayla Gomes, Gina Nutting, Zhandali Fontes & Laura Ellis – on the first team all-region.

Haley Wells and Shauna Fitzpatrick were also both recognized, earning second team honors.

KAYLA GOMES, Forward (Halifax, Mass.)
Kayla Gomes (Halifax) posted a sensational first-year for the Warriors. The freshman forward finished with a team-best 22 goals and 51 points, while placing third on Massasoit with seven assists. Her goal total ranked tied for ninth in the NJCAA rankings amongst Division III players.

In addition, Gomes scored a goal in 13 of the team's 16 matches on the season and netted multiple goals in a game six times. Back on September 18, she earned NJCAA Division III Player of the Week, by recording four goals and three assists in a pair of Massasoit victories.

GINA NUTTING, Midfield (Rockland, Mass.)
Gina Nutting played center midfield for the Warriors as a freshman, posting four goals and tied for a team-high honors with eight assists. The Rockland native started 15 matches and recorded at least one point in 11 games.

Nutting quarterbacked the Warriors into netting a total of 52 goals, 20 more than the squad scored a season ago.

ZHANDALI FONTES, Forward (Taunton, Mass.)
For the second consecutive season, Zhandali Fontes earned a spot on the first team all-region squad.

Fontes finished second on the team in goals (12) and tied Nutting for team-high honors in assists with eight. Her 32 points only trailed Gomes on the Warriors and ranked fourth in the region.

LAURA ELLIS, Goalie (Raynham, Mass.)
Laura Ellis tallied three individual shutouts and was a part of six clean sheets for the Warriors in goal this past season.

Overall, Ellis made 81 saves and allowed 2.06 goals per game over 14 matches. She recorded 10-or-more saves three times, including a career-high 15 against CCRI. Ellis had a span of allowing just two goals over a seven-match-span totaling of 555 minutes.

HALEY WELLS, Defender (Whitman, Mass.)
Haley Wells was the last line of defense for the Warriors, serving as the team sweeper in 2014. The lock down defender helped Massasoit total six total shutouts, including three in a row during one stretch of the season.

Even as a defender, Wells managed to total 16 points, netting five goals and recording six assists.

SHAUNA FITZPATRICK, Defender (Whitman, Mass.)
Shauna Fitzpatrick was one of the most versatile players for Massasoit. During the season, she saw time as a forward, midfielder and primarily as a stopper on defense.

Fitzpatrick tallied five goals and three assists in her first year with the Warriors.
