Women's Soccer Wins Third Straight Match

BOSTON ---- The Massasoit women's soccer team defeated Bunker Hill CC in commanding fashion, 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon on the road.

Kayla Gomes (Halifax) posted her first collegiate hat trick, all coming in the first half, in the victory. Zhandali Fontes (Taunton) netted two first half goals and one assist, while Shauna Fitzpatrick (Whitman) and Stephanie Villanueva (Whitman) each found the back of the net after intermission.

Laura Ellis (Raynham) and Djelsia Andrade (Brockton) combined for the shutout. Andrade made two saves in the second half against Bunker Hill (0-4, 0-2)

"I actually thought we played better in the second half," head coach Jim Stapleton said, despite his team being up 5-0 at the half. "All the girls got a chance to play and contribute. It was a big win for us and we are excited for the Bristol Bees on Thursday."

WHY MASSASOIT WON: It was quite simple, the Warriors kept the ball in Bunker Hill's half of the field. Massasoit was able to finish putting 13 shots on goal. In total, the Warriors fired off 38 shots to just four by the Bulldogs.

KEY PLAY OF THE MATCH: The Warriors caged the Bulldogs early, as Fontes netted both her goals and Gomes scored her first of three in the first 15 minutes of action. The early scoring spree put the game out of reach early.

THREE IN A ROW: After starting the year 0-2, Massasoit has rung off three consecutive victories. Two of those wins have come against divisional foes on the road -- at Bristol and at Bunker Hill. Massasoit moves to above .500 for the first time this season, at 3-2 overall and 2-0 in Region XXI contests. The Warriors have now won three consecutive matches.

GOMES' GOAL STREAK TO FIVE: Kayla Gomes has now scored at least one goal in her first five collegiate matches at Massasoit. WIth her three goals on Tuesday, Gomes now has a team and region best nine goals on the season.

SHUTOUT STREAK KEEPS GOING: Laura Ellis and Djelsia Andrade blanked Bunker Hill to run the shutout streak for the Warriors to three consecutive games. Over a four-game span, Massasoit has not allowed a goal in 288 minutes.

NEXT UP: Massasoit hosts Bristol CC on Thursday at Warrior Field. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
