Six Women's Soccer Players Named All-Region

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- A total of six student-athletes off the 2013 Massasoit CC women's soccer team were named to the All-New England Region XXI teams, announced by the conference over the weekend.

The six players earning postseason honors marked the most by a Warrior squad since 2009. Of those six Warriors to be recognized, four were named First Team All-New England, second most in program history and most since 1990.

The four players that earned First Team All-New England featured: Melanie Thompson (Middleboro), Kristin Reardon (Weymouth), Katie Arnold (Weymouth) and Zhandali Fontes (Taunton). 

The duo of Stephanie Villanueva (Whitman) and Ashley Westover (Stoughton) rounded out the award winners for Massasoit, earning a nod on the All-Region second team.

Massasoit concluded the season last Saturday falling to eventual District Champion Holyoke CC, 2-0, to close out the season 6-9-0 overall, 6-6-0 in Region XXI and 6-3-0 in divisional games.

ALL-NEW ENGLAND FIRST TEAM

Melanie Thompson, Forward
• Netted a team-best 15 goals on the season
• Her goal total is tied for second in Region XXI
• Scored 14 goals in league games, most in the region in 10 matches
• Posted four multi-goal performances
• Netted five goals in a win at Bunker Hill on Sept. 30

Kristin Reardon, Goalie
• Topped the region in saves with 148
• Posted five shutouts
• Played every minute in every match in goal for the Warriors
• Recorded 10 or more saves seven times
• Allowed only 1.71 goals per game in league contests

Katie Arnold, Midfield
• Defender that transitioned to midfield and forward
• Led the team and ranked ninth in the region in assists with four
• Found the back of the net two times
• Scored a crucial goal in the regular season finale victory at Springfield Tech

Zhandali Fontes, Forward
• Netted six goals in six league games before suffering a season-ending injury
• Six league goals ranked fifth in the conference
• Recorded a hat trick against Bunker Hill on Sept. 17

ALL-NEW ENGLAND SECOND TEAM

Stephanie Villanueva, Defense
• Anchored the defense for the Warriors, starting 14 of 15 matches
• Posted two goals and recorded one assist
• Scored the only goal in an overtime win on a PK vs. Springfield Tech on Sept. 4

Ashley Westover, Defense
• Key defender for the Warriors and was responsible for free kicks and corners
• Finished with four goals and three assists
• All four goals came off free kicks
• Tied for eighth with four goals in league play
