Holyoke CC Bests Women's Soccer, 2-0

HOLYOKE, Mass. ---- On a brisk, windy afternoon, Holyoke CC defeated the Massasoit CC women's soccer team, 2-0, in the New England Region XXI Finals on Saturday.

The Warriors end the season as runners up in the conference with an overall record of 6-9-0 and a 6-3-0 mark in conference-divisional games. All three divisional losses came to the HCC Cougars.

"Holyoke was the better team today. We gave them everything we had, they just a lot more opportunities on offense today than we did. Overall, I thought our defense was good and it was a strong performance by our team, we just came up short in the end," head coach Ruben Teixeria said.

Massasoit fought right with HCC for the first 45 minutes, deadlocked in a scoreless tie at the half. Warrior keeper, Kristin Reardon (Weymouth) was nothing short of a warrior in net, keeping her team in the game making eight of her 14 total saves prior to intermission.

"Kristin did great in goal for us today. She never gave up and played until the end. Her saves were dynamite for us and she looked like an all-region goalie for us," Teixeira said.

The Cougars would strike early after halftime, netting a goal within the first minute of the second stanza off the foot of Breanna Line.  HCC added some cushion to its lead, as Nicole Callini buried a free kick shot from 30 yards out at the 60:14 mark.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, Massasoit had a pair of great scoring chances but were unable to finish. Kaitlyn Ring (Holbrook) nailed the post and Melanie Thompson's (Middleboro) shot was deflected on a full-extension save to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard.

Thompson finished with six of Massasoit's seven shots on the day.

Following the game, the All-Region XXI Team was announced as six Warriors earned the nod. Four players were named to the first team, featuring Melanie Thompson, Kristin Reardon, Zhandali Fontes (Taunton) and Katie Arnold (Weymouth).  Stephanie Villanueva (Whitman) and Ashley Westover (Stoughton) earned second team accolades.
