Fontes’ Hat Trick Leads Women’s Soccer To 6-0 Victory

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Zhandali Fontes (Taunton, Mass.) recorded her first career hat trick as the Massasoit Community College women's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 win over Bunker Hill CC on Tuesday afternoon.

Massasoit (3-1-0) also received two goals off the bench from Melanie Thompson (Middleboro, Mass.), who had missed the last two games due to injury and Ashley Westover (Stoughton, Mass.) chipped in with her third goal of the season.

"We really did a nice job up top with our passes," Fontes said. "That's why we were able to play so well today."

Things started off slow offensively for the Warriors, until the 16th minute of play, when Thompson connected on a breakaway to snap the 0-0 score. The goal from Thompson ignited a quick spurt by Massasoit, as it would score three total goals over a seven-minute span.

Fontes found the back of the net just over a minute later, and Thompson scored her second goal off a corner kick right in front of the net in the 23rd minute.

Leading 3-0 at halftime, the Warriors would add three more goals in the second half, two off the foot of Fontes and Ashley Westover buried a penalty kick to round out the scoring.

Not to be lost in the offensive explosion by the Warriors was the play of goalkeeper Kristin Reardon (Weymouth, Mass.). The sophomore made four total saves, marking her third shutout in four matches this season. In fact, Massasoit has yet to allow a goal on its home field in 2013.

"We still have to work on our passes offensively. Our defense is solid, we do need to practice a little more on stringing things together on offense," Fontes said.

Next up for the Warriors is a road trip on Thursday to play Bristol CC. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
