Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker In Double OT

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- The Massasoit Community College women's soccer had chance after chance offensively, but were unable to find the back of the net, falling in a double-overtime thriller to Dean College, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

Dean College received the game-winning goal off the foot of Arianna Medeiros in the 107th minute to improve the Bulldogs to 6-6 on the season.  The goal was a breakaway, set up by Irene Clifford.

"I thought we were the better team today and created more opportunities offensively, we were just unlucky in trying to put the ball in the back of the net. We kept trying but could not finish today," head coach Ruben Teixeira said.

The Warriors (5-8) had their chances in the second half and in the overtime periods. Ashley Westover (Stoughton) had a free kick that hit the crossbar in the 87th minute of action.

In the second overtime period, Westover fired another free kick shot which landed past the Dean keeper for what appeared to be the game-winning goal. Unfortunately for Massasoit, it was an indirect kick and the ball did not deflect off anyone, causing the goal to be negated by the officiating crew.

Kristin Reardon (Weymouth) finished with seven saves in goal for the Warriors, while her counterpart from Dean, Paige Marshall made three stops in the shutout for the Bulldogs. .

Overall, the Warriors outshot the Bulldogs, 24 to 17, in the loss.

"It was a very good game and anything can happen when a game goes to two overtime periods. Obviously the loss is disappointing, but we played really hard and with a lot of energy and showed some great passion out on the field today," Teixeira said.

Massasoit will round out the regular season on Saturday, with a road contest at Springfield Tech, in Springfield, Mass. If the Warriors win or tie, they will receive an automatic bid into the Region XXI Championship held on Oct. 26.
