Massasoit Softball Drops Doubleheader At CCRI To Begin Season

WARWICK, R.I. ---- The Massasoit Community College softball team opened the 2014 campaign falling to the Community College of Rhode Island, 6-0 and 7-2, in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

"It was nice to finally play some games," head coach Sandy Lombardi said. "CCRI's pitching was very strong and we made too many errors that killed us. We've only had our entire team together for practice once so far, so I was encouraged with some things that I saw."

Massasoit returns to action on Sunday, hosting New Hampshire Technical Institute in a twin bill at Cardinal Spellman High School in Brockton. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

Game 1: CCRI 6, Massasoit 0
The Warriors struggled with the bats in the first game of the year, managing just one hit against CCRI.

Felicia Pezzano (Brockton) knocked the lone Massasoit hit, finishing 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk.

Taylor Richards of Walpole (0-1) was saddled with the loss. The right-hander recorded four strikeouts in the circle. Of the six runs allowed by Richards, only three were earned.

Game 2: CCRI 7, Massasoit 2

Massasoit took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but miscues during the final three innings proved to be the difference as the Knights earned the sweep.

Ashly Pitts (Rockland) had a hit and knocked in a run, while Marina Palladino (Carver) collected a hit and scored. Tess Stapleton (Brockton) scored the other run for Massasoit, as the Warriors dropped to 0-2 on the young season.
