Almeida Heads Home Game Winner as Massasoit Defeats CCRI, 4-3

LINCOLN, Rhode Island ---- Sophomore Ruben Almeida (Pawtucket, R.I.) headed in the game-winning goal in the 80th minute as the Massasoit men's soccer team defeated the Community College of Rhode Island, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon.

To go along with Almeida's game winner, Leon Zaffonato (Brazil) had a career game, scoring once and dishing out three assists to improve the Warriors to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the crucial series against CCRI (2-5).

Massasoit jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, with goals from Bruno Martins (Cape Verde) and Deivys D'Almeida (New Bedford) in the 13th and 20th minutes of action.

CCRI found life when Cornelius Tay finished in the 35th minute and scored for the second time in the 53rd minute of action to even up the score.

The scoring seesaw tipped back in favor of the Warriors when Zaffonato buried home free kick in the 63rd minute of action to retake the one-goal advantage.

But, that slim lead was short lived as the Knights found the back of the net less than two minutes later to knot up the score, yet again.

The game would remained tied until Almeida's game-winning header off a corner kick cross from Zaffonato with 10 minutes to go in the match.

Massasoit returns to the pitch on Saturday, hosting first-year program Quincy College at 1 PM.
