Fernandes Stops Pair of PK’s in Men’s Soccer 2-1 Victory At Bergen CC

PARAMUS, New Jersey ---- In a first half that saw plenty of action, sophomore goalie Wilson Fernandes (Cape Verde) stopped two penalty kicks as the Massasoit men's soccer team held on to defeat Bergen CC, 2-1 on Sunday.

Fernandes produced a standout effort in net, making a total of 12 saves, none bigger than the pair of PK's he swatted away in the opening stanza.

"Wilson had a great game for us in goal," head coach Rui Estrela said. "Those two stops on PKs were the difference in the game."

Massasoit (1-1) attacked early and often against the Bulldogs. Charlie Swann (England) connected on the team's first goal, his second in as many days, by way of a penalty kick in the 10th minute. Seven minutes later, Ruben Almeida (Pawtucket, R.I.) rocketed a low liner to the back of the net, off an assist from Darcy Guimaraes (Rockland) to give the Warriors an early 2-0 advantage.

Bergen (1-3) cut its deficit in half, with a goal in the 30th minute, the lone blemish on Fernandes' day in goal.

In the second half, each team had scoring chances, but neither squad was able to finish as Massasoit picked up its first victory of the season.

"Considering the field conditions were rough with all the rain and it being our second game in as many days I was pretty pleased with how we played. We need to clean some things up and get some guys healthy moving forward," Estrela said.

Massasoit hosts Monroe CC on Saturday at 1 PM.
