Tough-Luck Goals Sink Men’s Soccer

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- ASA New York scored a goal in each half to top the Massasoit men's soccer team, 2-0, on a windy and wet Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.

The loss drops the Warriors to 5-4-1 overall, with a crucial matchup at home against regional rival CCRI slated for Tuesday at 4 PM.

"Today there was some great soccer played, despite some tough conditions," head coach Rui Estrela said. "Overall I thought we played well, just made two mistakes which costs us the game; that happens in soccer. ASA is a very talented team and playing teams like them only makes us better. Today was a good test for us going into next week's game against CCRI."

The game featured two evenly matched teams, with both the Warriors and Avengers having slim chances to put the ball in the net.

In the 10th minute of action, ASA's Michael Bolvin had a chance from point blank range, but Massasoit keeper Ollie Dagraca (Brockton) deflected the shot away for one of his four saves on the day.

One of Massasoit's top scoring opportunities came in the 30th minute off a rocketed shot from just outside the box by Edgar Lopez (Seekonk), but the shot was saved keeping the score tied.

Through the wet and rainy conditions, the Avengers would finally have lightning strike in the 37th minute. A cross by ASA to forward Jean Ismaie Voltaire snuck its way past Dagraca on a header for the game's first goal.

Trailing 1-0, Massasoit had a great chance for the equalizer in the 65th minute, but a shot by Deivys D'Almeida (New Bedford) sailed high over the cross bar.

ASA tacked on an insurance goal during a frantic final minutes of the match, as Ibrahim Lakanobo found the back of the net in the 88th minute.

Massasoit outshot ASA, 12-10 in the loss, with each team putting four shots on net.
