BROCKTON, Mass. ---- The Massasoit Community College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting Dean College on Wednesday afternoon in a contest that saw a feverous finish.
The game was evenly matched and stayed scoreless up until the game's final 10 minutes as Dean College took a late lead and would hold on. In the 81st minute, Dean's Javan Philip handled a bounding pass and connecting for his first of two goals in the game. Philip would add what proved to be the difference maker six minutes later to put the Boomers up 2-0.
Just 25 seconds after Philip's second goal, speedster Edmar Vieria (Brockton, Mass.) found the back of the net in the 87th minute on a pass from Joel Lobo (Brockton, Mass.), cutting the deficit to one goal with just over two and a half minutes remaining. The goal was the third of the season for Vieria.
The Warriors (2-2-1) were unable to muster up any additional scoring opportunities, as the Boomers escaped with the one-goal win.
"Part of the problem today was that we came out extremely flat," head coach Rui Estrela said. "We thought we were going to come out and run over this team and our guys were not prepared to come out and play. I am extremely disappointed in our overall team play."
The first half saw very few offensive chances by either squad. Dean almost connected on a goal late in the first period off a punt from its own goalkeeper Denzel Teleau. The ball traveled more than three quarters of the field and bounced high up into the air, but Massasoit goalie Torrey Mederios (Dartmouth, Mass.) dove back and punched the ball over the goal for an impressive save.
Prior to the late scoring frenzy in the final 10 minutes, Joao Cardoso (Brockton, Mass.) corralled a pass off a free kick inside the 18-yard box, but his sizzling shot was saved at the 74-minute mark.
Dean held the edge in shots, 18 to 15, and in corner kicks eight to seven.
Teleau finished with eight saves in net, while Mederois made five stops.
Next up for the Warriors is road game at Monroe College on Saturday. The match is set for 7 p.m.
