Massasoit CC Men’s Soccer Falls To Burlington CC, 2-1

NEWARK, N.J. ---- The Massasoit men's soccer team held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but Burlington CC rallied to score two second-half goals to defeat the Warriors, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Warriors to 6-5-2 on the season and will play on Wednesday at Dean College. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Franklin, Mass.

It appeared as though Burlington would get on the scoreboard first, as the Barons had a chance to score off a penalty kick. The attempt would be denied, as Massasoit keeper Andre Reis (Fall River) made one his five saves on the day to keep the game scoreless.

Later in the first half, Massasoit would strike first on a goal off the foot of Ruben Varela (Brockton) in the 25th minute and the Warriors would hold the 1-0 advantage at intermission.

However, the Burlington offense would step up and find the back of the net on two occasions in the second half and hold on for the 2-1 victory.

"It was a great game and both teams were very evenly matched. It was one of those things, if you are on the right side of the track you win, if not you lose," head coach Rui Estrela said.

"A lack of focus resulted in two missed markings, which allowed Burlington to score both goals," Estrela said. "I thought overall we played well, we just need to finish offensively and stay focused throughout the match."
