DeCoste Fires School Record 79 to Qualify for NJCAA National Tournament

CHICOPEE, Mass. ---- Massasoit's Jack DeCoste rolled in a school-record low 79 on the second day of the Region 21 Tournament at Chicopee Country Club, placing sixth overall in the two-day event and qualifying for the NJCAA National Championship.

DeCoste will represent the Warriors at Nationals, held at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, N.Y., from June 6-9. The East Sandwich native becomes just the second Massasoit student-athlete in program history to qualify for Nationals, joining Mike Cappadona of Foxboro, who advanced back in 2015.

After a slow start for DeCoste, who shot a 91 on day one, the freshman was dialed in the next day, firing the second lowest score on day two, highlighted by five birdies. DeCoste's two-day total of 170 (91+79=170) placed sixth individually, with Matt Murphy (79+78=157) of Bristol claiming the individual crown.

In addition, DeCoste becomes the first Massasoit golfer to shoot a round below 80, with his day two score of 79 at Regionals.

Jimmy Lawless of Hull also competed for the Warriors, carding an 89 on the first day and a 108 on day two to finish with a two-day tournament score of 197. Lawless placed 18th overall, and his first day total of 89 was the 11th lowest.

CCRI claimed the team championship with a total score of 678, followed by Springfield Tech (710) and Bristol (758).
