Massasoit's Clutch Free Throw Shooting Holds Off Springfield Tech, 58-56

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Massasoit made five of its final six free throws in the game's final minute and blocked a possible game-winning shot to hold off Springfield Tech, 58-56 at the Peter Asiaf Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

Paul Bessette fired a 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds left, but Bryan Tavares deflected the shot to improve the Warriors to 13-7 overall.

Tavares, of Rockland, played like a man on a mission in the second half, netting all 10 of his points after intermission.

Mike Ward (Brockton) led all scorers with 24 points, netting 12 in each half for the Warriors.

STCC (10-12) led 26-24 at the break.

Mark Munroe (Quincy) and Ian Wade (Brockton) each chipped in with seven points each.

Wade and Connor Schaefer (Bourne) combined to make 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute.

Bessette paced the Rams with 20 points, 15 coming in the second half. Anthony Gowdy-Jimenez and Arvon Gordon each added 12 points apiece.

Massasoit hosts Bristol on Tuesday at 7 PM.
