BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Nick Andrews (Raynham) launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie and give the Warriors a dramatic 4-2 game one victory against Quinsigamond on Saturday afternoon. The Wyverns captured game two, 3-0, in a pitcher's duel to earn a doubleheader split on the day.
Game 1: Massasoit 4, Quinsigamond 2 (9 Innings)
Tied up 2-2 in the last of the ninth, Andrews rocked a two-run blast to give the Warriors a 4-2 victory in game one.
Luis Ramirez (Dedham) drew a one out walk in front of Andrews who connected for his first homer of the season in walk-off fashion.
Andrews finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Aidan O'Neill (Halifax) contributed a two-hit day and knocked in a run.
Trailing 1-0 early on after one inning of action, Massasoit saw the score swing in its favor in the second. Jonathan O'Donnell (Hull) got things rolling with a base hit to start the inning as four consecutive Warriors reached base, accounting for two runs. O'Neill's RBI single highlighted the two-run spurt.
The Warrior lead remaining 2-1 until the top of the seventh. Massasoit starter Luke DiTondo (Marshfield) pitched outstanding, working into the seventh. The first two batters reached for the Wyverns as Massasoit went to the bullpen and called on freshman Tyler Horton (New Bedford). Quinsigamond pushed across the game tying run, but stranded a runner in scoring position.
DiTondo, who did not figure in the decision, went 6+ innings, allowing two runs off six hits, striking out five and walking four.
Massasoit put two runners on in the seventh, but could not cross home as the game went to extra innings.
Neither team could touch home leading up to Andrews' ninth inning dramatic big fly.
Tyler Horton (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory, allowing only one hit in three innings of relief work. The righty fanned two and did not walk a batter and has now allowed a run in nine innings this season, spanning over four appearances.
QCC's Bryce Melanson (1-3) suffered the loss, despite working into the ninth inning. The righty went 8.1 innings, allowing four runs, two earned off eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Game 2: Quinsigamond 3, Massasoit 0 (7 Innings)
A classic pitcher's duel between QCC's Jordan Weber and Massasoit's Luke Lewando (Brockton) saw the Wyverns earn a 3-0 victory in game two.
Lewando (0-2) went the distance in a touch-luck loss. The southpaw needed just 78 pitches to go all seven innings, giving up three runs, two earned, off seven hits, while fanning five.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, Weber was just a tad better, firing a complete game two-hit shutout to split on the doubleheader. Weber fanned six, walked four and allowed only two hits, coming off the bats of Lewando and Ricky Sherlock (Whitman).
Massasoit returns to the diamond on Tuesday, with a road trip to UConn-Avery Point.
