Stearns Shuts Out Southern Maine CC; Warriors Split DH

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine ---- Jake Stearns (Plymouth) fanned 10 in a complete game shutout as the Massasoit baseball team split a doubleheader at Southern Maine CC on Sunday. The Warriors earned a 2-0 victory in game one and dropped game two, 3-1.

Game 1: Massasoit 2, Southern Maine 0
Stearns kept his stretch of sizzling starts intact, as the southpaw allowed only four hits over 7.0 innings in the game one victory.

The win upped the sophomore's record to 5-1 and has now struck out 43 batters over his last four starts. In each of those starts, Stearns has reached double digit strikeouts.

Over the final four innings, Stearns was dominant, allowing only one base runner, including striking out the side in the seventh.

The lone scoring in the game came in the second inning. Alex Carey (East Bridgewater) socked a double, followed by a single from Bryan Dwyer (Abington) to start the frame. After Dwyer stole second to put two Warriors in scoring position, sophomore Justin Martinho (Dighton) roped a two-run single.

Dwyer went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and Martinho added two hits to his two RBI.

Game 2: Southern Maine CC 3, Massasoit 1
Massasoit held a 1-0 lead through five innings, but the Southern Maine Seawolves scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to knock off the Warriors in game two.

Warrior starter Zack Reid (2-5) was in control through the first five innings, yielding only three hits and three walks over that span. The sophomore righty recorded nine of the 15 outs as strikeouts in that stretch, with six of the K's looking.

In the sixth, Reid retired the first batter of the inning, but five consecutive batters would reach against the Massasoit starter and reliever Scott Anderson, accounting for the three runs in the game.

Kevin Huscher (Middleboro) and Alex Carey each went 2-for-3. Huscher scored Massasoit's lone run in the top of the first.

The Warriors return to the diamond on Wednesday, hosting CCRI at 3:30 p.m.
