Walk-Off Win Gives Baseball DH Sweep Of Quinsigamond

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Following a solid pitching performance from Jake Stearns in game one, the Massasoit baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Quinsigamond CC in walk-off fashion, to claim victories by scores of 6-2 and 4-3 at Colombo Field on Saturday.

The pair of wins ups Massasoit's record to 12-12 on the season and is scheduled to host Dean College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Game 1: Massasoit 6, Quinsigamond 2
Jake Stearns (Plymouth) continued his string of quality starts for the Warriors as Massasoit claimed game one, 6-2.

Stearns (4-1) went the distance, fanning 10 in a complete game, seven-inning effort. The southpaw allowed two earned runs off seven hits and walked only one in his fifth consecutive quality start for the Warriors.

The sophomore southpaw cruised through the first six frames, before running into some trouble in the seventh. With the Warriors leading comfortably 6-0, the Wyverns plated two runs on three hits. But Stearns escaped further damage getting back-to-back punch outs to close out the victory. With the 10 strikeouts, Stearns has now reached double digit K's in three consecutive starts.

Offensively, Massasoit managed just five hits but made the most of its opportunities. Alex Carey (East Bridgewater) went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Jimmy Lawless (Hull) went a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish and scored two runs, while Tyler Morini (Plymouth) knocked in a pair for the winners.

Game 2: Massasoit 4, Quinsigamond 3 (8 innings)
Bryan Dwyer (Abington) scored all the way from second on an infield single by Jimmy Lawless (Hull) as the Warriors captured game two in walk-off fashion.

Dwyer led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and moved into scoring position after a Quinsigmond balk. Following consecutive strikeouts, Lawless poked a two-out infield single that was then misplayed at first allowing Dwyer to race home with the dramatic game-winning run.

Lost in the extra-inning dramatics was the relief performance of freshman James Bussiere (Norwood). The right-hander improved his record to 2-3 on the season by pitching 3.1 innings of one hit baseball. Bussiere struck out four and walked one.

Kevin Huscher (Middleboro) and Dwyer each roped a pair of hits, while Morini ripped an RBI double as part of a three-run third inning.
